Midweek Message – June 1, 2018

We have different things happening in each congregation this Sunday!

At Riverview, we are ‘praying with scripture’ using Mark 8:27-29, the ‘who do you say that I am’ passage. We will be worshipping around tables in an interactive format, as we seek to refine our Core Values into a short statement.

Following worship and Birthday Sunday celebrations, you are invited to stay behind for a Congregational Meeting/Discussion regarding the governance model we have been trialing the past 14 months. The evaluation document has been has been available for over a month, but in case you haven’t had a chance to check it out before now, please do so before Sunday.

At Nine Mile River, the elders are leading worship again this week in order for me to stay behind at Riverview. I am providing them with a reflection based on: Genesis 3: 8-15 & 1 Samuel 3: 1-10.

Questions I am pondering:

·        Called to What?

·        Who calls us?

·        Who is called?

·        When are we called?

·        How do we respond?

Riverview Community Round Table – One of our stated valued is Connecting to Community. As a way of furthering that, on Tuesday, the Transition Team and Riverview Executive hosted a Community Round Table, where we invited a variety of community leaders in to see how all of us could work together for the betterment of the community, perhaps find a project that we could undertake together that we wouldn’t be able to undertake on our own.

We explored strengths/gaps/opportunities in the community. A variety of possibilities were shared and energy and enthusiasm was expressed for a free community meal in the fall. We are making plans to meet again to more fully develop a plan as well as look at funding options from the United Church Seeds of Hope Foundation.

I am including this link again from a church in Thunder Bay that did something similar.

Other Things That Are Going On

Last weekend, I attended the Annual Meeting of Maritime Conference. I preached Thursday night, you can find the link to my reflecting here.

I was installed as President of Maritime Conference on Sunday morning; thanks so much to Joan Gallant and Al Wallace for being present for it, as well as the gift and sentiments expressed; your support means much to me. If the remits pass at General Council this summer, conferences will come to an end on December 31, 2018, so my term may be the shortest of any president!
